Motivation is a psychological instinct of an individual which encourages a person to performance better and also act as positive force in achieving desired goals in life.

High positive motivation increases output while negative motivation reduces performance.

  • A motive is an inner state that energizes, activates, or moves and directs or channels behaviour goals” (Berelson and Steiner)
  • “It is the stimulation of any emotion or desire operating upon one’s will and promoting or driving it to action” (Lillis)

There are two types of motivation –

  • Intrinsic: Inner drive as well as internal values of an individual insist to perform better and to achieve goals in life.
  • Extrinsic: External factors like money, praise, awards, recognition, and benefits play a role to perform better.

Academic motivation refers to the cause of behaviors that are in some way related to academic functioning and success, such as how much effort students put forth, how effectively they regulate their work, which endeavors they choose to pursue, and how persistent they are when faced with obstacles (Schunk et al. 2008).

Symptoms of academic motivation

  • Attending classes on time
  • Responding in class when teachers teach and ask questions
